Dr Hans Maier: "Rondol 10mm best suited for 2nd generation HME technology"

Solid foams seem a very promising new field of activities for hot melt extrusion (HME) of emerging bioplastics and pharmaceutical products. Combining the science of foam with the engineering of extrusion makes foam extrusion to a second generation HME technology.  

Rondol has equipped our 10mm Microlab extruder located in our Strasbourg lab in order to work out and achieve stable process conditions in terms of both pressure, temperature and shear for foaming Kollidon and Soluplus while feeding some OEB 1+2 drug substances and injecting sub critical CO2 in zone 5 out of a 8 heated zones 40/1 L/D easy clean barrel.

Complete dissolution of CO2 into the polymer matrix while avoiding the CO2 from escaping the extruder upstream into the feeder was achieved thanks to an optimum screw configuration designed through our PASS software further validated by a series of trials.
